Project co-led by PhD Eng. Daria Sikorska from KTiBŚ, SGGW and the University of Łódź, received funding from the National Science Center
One of the projects that received funding from the National Science Center is research on the green path for children to school, which was developed in cooperation with the Warsaw University of Life Sciences and the University of Łódź.
In today’s increasingly digital world, the home-to-school route is sometimes the only chance for children to come into close contact with nature. Unfortunately, not all children have the same opportunity to enjoy its benefits, as we have shown in our previous research in the prestigious journal Environmental Science and Policy: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1462901119310780.
We will examine to what extent the greenery accompanying the way of children to school:
- cleans the air
- improves the microclimate
- protects against noise
- enables contact with wildlife
We want to find out what is the role of green in choosing the path of children from home to school. By proposing a comprehensive, interdisciplinary approach, combining research on the structure of greenery with ecosystem services and the preferences and needs of residents.
The project will expand the understanding of urban systems and contribute to the creation of a city friendly to all residents.
Project entitled “Children’s access to green areas on the way to school: from operationalization to spatially dynamic application of the concept of environmental justice” will be implemented in Łódź.
The project manager is PhD Edyta Łaszkiewicz from the Department of Social and Ecological Systems Analysis, Faculty of Economics and Sociology, University of Lodz. At the Warsaw University of Life Sciences, the project is led by PhD Eng. Daria Sikorska from the Department of Remote Sensing and Environmental Assessment (Institute of Environmental Engineering).
