Teaching Laboratory - Environmental Chemistry and Soil Science Laboratory
The Environmental Chemistry and Soil Science Laboratory conducts teaching and research in environmental chemistry, soil science, and instrumental chemical analyses.
The Environmental Chemistry and Soil Science Laboratory conducts teaching and research in environmental chemistry, soil science, and instrumental chemical analyses.
The laboratory offers courses in the following subjects:
– Environmental chemistry (first-cycle studies in Environmental Engineering, year 1).
– Soil science and reclamation (first-cycle studies in Environmental Engineering, year 1).
– Chemistry in environmental engineering (second-cycle studies in Environmental Engineering, year 1).
– Chemistry (first-cycle studies in Safety Engineering, year 1).
The laboratory supports the preparation of diploma theses and conducts research on selected environmental components, particularly soils, focusing on the forms and mobility of chemical pollutants and their interactions with mineral and organic components of the environment. Research also includes assessing pollutant impacts on the environment and remediation processes, including pollutant immobilisation.
Equipment:
1. A laboratory station for determining selected environmental quality parameters, including pH, electrical conductivity, and concentrations of selected ions in water samples and extracts. The station is equipped with pH meters, conductivity meters, and ion-selective electrodes.
2. A spectrophotometric analysis station for the precise identification and quantification of a wide range of chemical compounds. It is equipped with a UV-Vis spectrophotometer (EasyPlus, Mettler-Toledo).
3. A chromatographic analysis station for the precise identification of petroleum hydrocarbons, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), pesticides, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and pharmaceutical compounds in environmental matrices. It is equipped with a gas chromatograph coupled with a flame ionisation detector (FID) and a mass spectrometer (GC-MS/MS).
Additional laboratory equipment includes:
– a ball mill for grinding and homogenisation of solid samples
– a laboratory drying oven
– laboratory balances (accuracy up to 0.01 g)
– analytical balances (accuracy up to 0.0001 g)
– a six-position water bath
– shakers with roller platforms
– a laboratory centrifuge
– burettes
– fume hoods
